It is located 28 km (17 mi) east of Kannur town, and 24 km (15 mi) east of Thalassery town, near the municipality of Mattannur in Thalassery taluk of Kannur district in Kerala. It is owned and operated by Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), a public–private consortium.

The airport could serve one million passengers in just nine months since commercial operations began. Amidst the COVID-19 crisis the greenfield airport could maintain stable growth and it achieved the milestone of two million passengers in the twenty-third month of operations in November 2020.

The first aircraft to land was an IAF (Indian Air Force) aircraft that touched down at the airport on 29 February 2016. The first trial passenger flight operation was conducted on 20 September 2018 using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Air India Express. On the inaugural day, 9 December 2018, an Air India Express flight IX 715 (Boeing 737-800) took off to Abu Dhabi at 10:13 (IST), becoming the first commercial passenger aircraft to depart from Kannur International Airport.

Due to Covid-19 and the need to follow strict guidelines set by the Government of India, Kannur Airport has a few rules and regulations set to be followed by its staff and passengers. The airport has an integrated passenger terminal for both international and domestic travellers with a floor area of 97,000 m2 (1,040,000 sq ft) for arrival and departure separately. It features six aerobridges with 48 check-in counters, 32 emigration counters, 16 customs counters, four conveyor belts and access control inside the terminal. The passenger terminal will use the swing facility. The international gates are used for domestic operations when there are no international flights. The Kannur Lighthouse is located near the Payyambalam Beach, a few kilometers from Kannur town, in Kerala state, south India. It is adjacent to the Sea View Park and the Government Guest House. The lighthouse is still active and overlooks the Arabian Sea. Cannanore is the old English name for the town named Kannur.   3. ST.ANGELO FORT : The magnificent fort was built in 1505by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese victory of India, /the ownership of the fort has changed hands several times. In 1663, the Dutch captured it. They subsequently gave the fort its present appearance. The Dutch sold the fort to the Arakkal Royal family in 1772. The British conquered it in 1790 and used it as one of their major military stations on the Malabar Coast. It is fairly well preserved as a protected monument under the Archeological Survey of India. A painting of this fort and the fishing ferry as a background is on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Kunjali Marakkar’s head was removed from his body and exhibited in the fort after his execution.
  4. ARAKKAL MUSEUM : The Arrakkal Museum is a museum dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, India. The museum is actually a section of the Arakkalkettu (Arakkal Royal Palace). The durbar hall section of the palace has been converted into a museum.
