Infrastructure Development Minister M. B. Patil confirmed that the AAI’s technical report, based on detailed inspections carried out earlier this year, will be handed over to the government within the next few days.
Two Possible Locations
The AAI team has narrowed down its study to two major sites for the proposed airport project:
- Kanakapura Road: Located in South Bengaluru, this area offers convenient links to existing and planned transport networks, making it a strong contender.
- Nelamangala–Kunigal Road: Situated in Bengaluru Rural district, this option could open up new opportunities for development in the city’s western region.
Minister Patil mentioned that the AAI might suggest both sites as feasible options. However, the final selection will depend on a comprehensive evaluation that considers not just technical suitability but also economic, demographic, and strategic factors.
Key Evaluation Factors
The government has emphasized that the decision will be made purely on merit, based on a 360-degree analysis covering:
- Financial Feasibility: Assessing construction, development, and long-term operational costs.
- Passenger and Cargo Potential: Understanding projected traffic volumes to ensure maximum utility.
- Future Growth: Planning with Bengaluru’s fast-rising aviation demand in mind, ensuring the airport remains viable for decades ahead.
Officials say the project is being treated as a top priority to meet the city’s expanding air traffic needs. The aim is to have the second airport operational by 2033, helping decongest Kempegowda International Airport and support Bengaluru’s position as a major aviation hub.
