China’s aviation sector has taken a major leap forward with the grand opening of Terminal 3 (T3) at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN). The newly inaugurated terminal represents more than an infrastructure upgrade—it signifies the transformation of Baiyun into one of the leading global aviation hubs.

The Phase III Expansion Project, which includes the new terminal and the airport’s fifth runway, significantly enhances Baiyun’s operational capacity and connectivity.

Highlights of the Expansion

Massive Capacity Boost: With the addition of T3, Baiyun Airport can now handle up to 120 million passengers annually, with a long-term potential to reach 140 million travelers. This milestone places Guangzhou among the busiest and most advanced airports in the world.

Integrated System for the Future: The project completes Baiyun’s “Five Runways, Three Terminals” blueprint, enabling smoother management of both domestic and international routes across the Greater Bay Area.

Architectural Innovation: Inspired by Guangzhou’s nickname “The Flower City,” Terminal 3’s unique flower-shaped design has earned it the moniker “Crown of the Flower City.”

The terminal is also a technology pioneer—becoming China’s first major terminal to use Building Information Modeling (BIM) for smart construction, alongside a fully digital archive management system.

Passenger Experience Redefined: The new Ground Transportation Center (GTC) offers direct access to high-speed rail, metro, and major roadways, ensuring effortless transit connections.

Adding to its attractions, T3 houses China’s first open-air airport observation deck, giving travelers and aviation fans a stunning panoramic view of aircraft movements.

This expansion marks a defining moment for Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, reinforcing its strategic ambition to become a leading international aviation gateway and a major node in the global air transport network.
