Key Highlights of the Expansion:
- New Third Runway & Expansion of Runway B
Construction has officially begun on a new third runway (Runway C), measuring 3,500 meters. In addition, the current Runway B will be extended from 2,500 meters to 3,500 meters. Once complete, the airport’s overall capacity will grow significantly—from 300,000 to 500,000 aircraft movements annually—by early 2029.
- Terminal 1 Renovation
The 5th floor of Terminal 1, including its popular Observation Deck, is undergoing major renovations. The refreshed design, inspired by “Japan’s four seasons and cultural richness,” will give passengers a unique travel experience. However, the Observation Deck will remain closed between April 7, 2025, and spring 2026 during the construction period.
- Digital Transformation
Narita is embracing smart airport technology, introducing AI-driven systems, biometric recognition for faster check-ins, and automated processes to reduce waiting times and improve efficiency. These upgrades are designed to make travel smoother and more seamless for all passengers.
- Future Vision: One Terminal Concept
Looking ahead, the airport has set out a long-term plan to merge its three terminals into one unified facility, known as the “One Terminal” concept. Plans also include a new cargo hub and improved transit connections to Tokyo, strengthening Narita’s position as a key international gateway.
