Current Runway Progress (September 2025)
- The full runway shutdown that began earlier this year ended in June 2025, when crews completed the heaviest phase of the project. Runway 4L-22R has since reopened for daily use.
However, additional construction is still required to finish the rehabilitation:
- Weeknight Closures: The runway will remain closed on select weeknights until the end of 2025.
- Weekend Closures: Full weekend closures are scheduled from September through December 2025.
Impact on Flight Operations
With one of Newark’s three runways unavailable during closures, the airport’s capacity to manage takeoffs and landings is reduced. Travelers may experience:
- Delays & Schedule Changes: Flight delays, diversions, and timetable adjustments are likely, especially during peak hours or poor weather.
- Use of Alternate Runways: Air traffic will be redirected to the airport’s remaining runways (4R-22L and 11-29). If weather conditions restrict these runways, delays could become more severe.
- FAA Capacity Limits: Adding to this, the FAA has extended flight caps at EWR through October 2026 to address air traffic control staffing and equipment challenges. This restriction means fewer flights per hour, further limiting capacity.
Advice for Passengers
If you’re traveling through Newark Liberty International Airport in the coming months, it’s best to:
- Check your flight status regularly.
- Allow extra time for potential delays.
- Stay in touch with your airline for schedule updates.
This runway rehabilitation project is a critical step in modernizing EWR’s infrastructure and improving long-term efficiency, but in the short term, passengers should expect occasional disruptions.
