For many years, the U.S. air traffic system has relied on older equipment and communication networks that struggle to handle today’s air travel demand. This new program is designed to fix those issues by introducing faster, more reliable, and more advanced technology.

Key Highlights

Lead Contractor: Peraton, a Virginia-based technology company, will manage the entire upgrade process and coordinate work across multiple systems.

Initial Funding: The project starts with an investment of $12.5 billion, with total costs expected to grow as the modernization progresses.

What Will Change: Old copper lines, aging radar systems, and outdated software will be replaced with modern fiber-optic, digital, and IP-based systems. These upgrades aim to improve efficiency and reduce technical failures.

Completion Target: The DOT and FAA are aiming to finish the major upgrades by 2028, a faster timeline compared to previous modernization attempts.

Strict Accountability: The contract includes performance rewards and penalties to ensure the project stays on schedule and meets quality standards.

This modernization marks an important step in preparing the U.S. airspace for future aviation needs, from growing passenger traffic to new types of aircraft. The goal is a safer, more dependable, and more modern air travel experience for everyone.
