History Islamabad International Airport
Construction of the Islamabad International Airport (ICAO: OPIS) began on April 7, 2007 and was formally inaugurated on April 20, 2018 for regular international and domestic flights.
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said in January 2005 that they were going to build a new airport. In November 2005, a 3,242 acre (1,312 ha) plot of land was purchased for Rs 2.5 billion.
The new airport was planned because the current airport, Benazir Bhutto International Airport, was getting more and more busy with planes and people.
It was thought that the number of passengers at the old airport was growing by 14 percent each year, which was much faster than the national growth rate of 4 percent. At the time, it was the second busiest airport in the country. Therefore, a site in Ranjha's Attock district was selected as the site for the construction of a new airport just a few kilometres from the Islamabad interchange on the M-1 and M-2 motorways. The foundation stone of the project was laid by former President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on April 7, 2007.
It was a project of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and designed by the French company Aéroports de Paris Ingenierie (ADPi) and CPG Corporation of Singapore. The whole project was financed by PCAA on its own. It is built on more than 3,200 acres of land and consists of a passenger terminal building, 2 runways, taxiways, an apron, and parking bays for wide-body aircraft.
There is also a cargo terminal, an air traffic control complex, a fuel farm, as well as a fire, crash, and rescue facility. The site of the airport is near Fateh Jang Tehsil in Attock District. It is 25 km equidistant from Zero Point, Islamabad, and Saddar, Rawalpindi. The airport is on par with international standards and serves as a major hub for all aviation activities in Pakistan.
On July 8, 2018, the first Airbus A380 landed in Islamabad, arriving as Emirates flight EK-2524 from Dubai International Airport. This flight had no seats for sale, but it was the first time an Airbus A380 landed in Pakistan.
Pakistan International Airlines has moved its international hub from Karachi's Jinnah International Airport to Islamabad International Airport, better reflecting the origin of its international passengers. [16
Ground Transport Islamabad International Airport
The airport is connected to Islamabad via the Srinagar Highway and to Rawalpindi via the GT Road (Highway N-5). A four-lane highway is also under construction to serve cargo traffic.
Islamabad International Airport is certified as a 3-Star Airport for facilities, comfort, cleanliness, shopping, food & beverages, staff service, and security & immigration.
"The terminal is just 2 years old, but it is already showing signs of poor maintenance or incomplete workmanship, which is disappointing. The facilities for shopping, food and beverages, and general customer comfort are quite limited and need improvement. Staff service is inconsistent and does not offer the expected levels of service and hospitality."
The airport's IATA code is BDA, and its ICAO code is TXKF. It has a single runway, Runway 12/30, which is approximately 2,157 meters (7,077 feet) in length. The runway can accommodate a range of aircraft, including commercial airliners and private jets. The airport plays a crucial role in Bermuda's tourism industry, as tourism is a significant economic driver for the island. Bermuda is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and cultural attractions, attracting tourists from around the world. In recent years, there have been various improvements and modernization efforts at L.F. Wade International Airport to enhance its facilities, security measures, and overall passenger experience. These improvements include upgrades to the terminal, runway, air traffic control systems, and security infrastructure. Overall, L.F. Wade International Airport is a vital transportation hub for Bermuda, connecting the island to various destinations worldwide and contributing to the island's economy and tourism industry.
