History Of Port Hedland International Airport

The airport has undergone a number of upgrades. Stage one of works include the extension of an existing taxiway and installation of new lighting, the construction of a new taxiway, widening of taxiway intersections and the extension of the domestic and international arrivals and departures area. This was to be completed by the end of July 2011. A further upgrade occurred in 2013.

Between 2008 and 2014, passenger movements more than doubled as a result of increased fly-in fly-out activity to the Pilbara during the mining boom. Virgin Australia Regional Airlines previously operated flights to Denpasar which were suspended in 2014, the Denpasar flight resumed on 4 April 2015 and is operated by Virgin Australia.

In July 2015, the Town of Port Hedland agreed to lease the airport to AMP Capital and Infrastructure Capital Group for 50 years. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

Statistics: Port Hedland International Airport was ranked 20th in Australia for the number of revenue passengers served in financial year 2014/15.

Operations: Port Hedland International Airport has two runways and two interconnecting taxiways. The main runway (Runway 14/32) is 2500m long and 45 m wide. It is used for regular passenger transport and is suitable for aircraft up to 100,000kgs (MTOW).

The second runway (Runway 18/36) is only for general aviation aircraft limited to 5,700kg (MTOW). It is 1000m long and 18m wide.

There are three sealed apron areas – the northern general aviation apron, main RPT parking apron and southern apron and helicopter operations area. Airline aircraft are catered for on the main parking apron in the five parking bays. Large corporate and private jets can also be accommodated. Space is limited for general aviation aircraft parking on the northern and southern aprons, so we suggest you arrange prior parking approval.

Port Hedland International Airport is a security controlled airport, therefore a valid Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) must be worn at all times. The requirements of the Aviation Transport Security Act and Regulations apply to airside activities. Community Of Port Hedland International Airport

PHIA values our relationship with St John Hedland team and the vital services they deliver where we live and work. We appreciate their participation in our airport emergency exercises and their first aid supplies and servicing. PHIA has invested in roading, lighting and infrastructure improvements for ambulance access to the airfield.

PHIA has contributed $15,000 towards a range of initiatives,

including the new defibrillators, 75 volunteer-designed shirts for the ‘Green Dream Team’ ambulance volunteers and contribution towards a community BBQ trailer.

Activities in our community: St John WA is partnering with Port Hedland International Airport (PHIA) to provide publicly accessible defibrillators to priority locations in the Hedland community.

These defibrillators will be available 24 hours a day to the public and may be the difference between life and death in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. St John Hedland Station Manager, Shauna Quirk said partnerships like this one were vital in building community resilience.

There are currently more than 4,788 defibrillators registered to the St John Community First Responder (CFR) program. The program aims to get defibrillators to cardiac arrest victims in the vital minutes before an ambulance arrives.

Community Support Program: Every five years we are proposing $10 million is taken out for development projects and this figure, in accordance with the model, can increase by $1 million every five years.

This will give us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fund a whole range of benefits for our community - anything from new cultural centres, facilities, roads and footpaths, parks and gardens, community services – and the final choices of where to invest will be driven by our community.
